What is Ball Valve

A ball valve is cylindrical in shape and has a hollow and pivoting ball as the flow control element. When the ball is open, the hole through the ball faces the flow, allowing fluid to pass through. When the handle of the valve is turned 90 degrees, the ball closes and the flow of fluid through the valve stops. When the valve is open, the handle (or lever) is perpendicular to the direction of flow, making visual indication of the status of the valve easy. The biggest benefit of ball valves is their long service life and reliable sealing capabilities.

Advantages of Ball Valve

Durability
One of the most remarkable pros of ball valves is their durability. They are well-known for their capacity to serve without a glitch under regular maintenance. Plastic ball valves surpass their metal counterparts when it comes to durability, because there are no issues like rust and corrosion are non-existential.

Easy maintenance
Ball valves do not demand much in terms of maintenance. Under conducive conditions, a single valve can function for years. Repairs do not cost much, and replacements are easily available, thanks to the non-stop demand for ball valves.

Easy operating mechanism
The ball valve's design allows for easy installation and repair work. The clever design makes the functioning easy without having to worry about side loads, which is often a problem with butterfly valves.

Efficiency
Ball valves are the first choice for applications that require a controlled flow. They are leakproof and open and close at lightning speed, making them a top choice for emergency operations.

Affordability and availability
Industrial devices need to be available at immediate notice. Ball valves are no different. Their non-availability can lead to unnecessary downtime and unexpected costs of industrial processes. Fortunately, thanks to the popularity and increasing demand for ball valves, there are many ball valve manufacturers all over the globe who design, manufacture and supply valves of all sizes and dimensions.
Their versatility in design also makes them an affordable choice. Ball valves are worth the investment as they remain durable and functional for a considerable amount of time.

Safety
High-quality ball valves are extremely dependable for functioning with high pressure and high-temperature flows. They provide safe service under extreme industrial conditions.

Versatility
The valve's versatile design makes it ideal and flexible for multiple applications, from simple domestic usage to complex industrial processes.

Parts of a Ball Valve

Valve body - This is the main part of the valve and contains all of the components for on/off control.

Rotary ball - The ball is designed with a center bore (hole) that the media flows through. The direction of the ball is controlled by turning the stem.

Stem - This connects the ball to the external control mechanism. For example, in a manual ball valve the stem is connected to a handle or lever.

Seats - These are discs that lie in between the body and the ball. Seats provide a seal between the two and also support the ball.

Power source - The stem of the ball valve is rotated using manual or actuated power sources. Manual actuation includes levers and handles that are controlled by an operator. Automated power sources like electric, pneumatic and hydraulic actuation are also available.

Packing - This is a seal around the stem that prevents the media from escaping.

Bonnet - The bonnet is the part of the body that contains the stem and packing.

Versatility of Ball Valves

Stopping and starting flow

It is commonplace to use ball valves across all industries to isolate flow and to keep it controlled, especially in upstream oil flow applications and oil and gas use in general. With the ball in the closed position, airtight sealing is achieved.

Moderate throttling

Even though butterfly valves are a better option for throttling, ball valves are able to be used in oil and gas industry processes where moderate throttling over short periods of time are required.

Flow diversion

Some design ball valves come with extra ports. This type of ball valve is designed to divert flow in different directions depending on the position of the openings through the ball. In this case, ball valves are handy for diverting liquids into multiple different containers.

How Does a Ball Valve Work?

Ball valves can have multiple ports, which are the openings in the valve. Two-way ball valves have two ports and are used for traditional on/off control. Multi-port valves (3-way, 4-way, etc.) are used in applications that require more than one source of media or that need to divert media in different directions.
The port of a ball valve can be opened or closed to control media either manually or through actuation. The manual option requires handles or levers and an operator to control the valve. Electric, hydraulic and pneumatic actuation don’t require an operator to control the valve. Actuation is ideal for complex control systems or those that are in remote areas that an operator cannot easily access.

What Safety Matters Need to Pay Attention to in the Use of Ball Valves

The following safety matters need to be noted during the use of ball valves to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment:

FAQ

Q: When is a ball valve open?

A: A ball valve is open when the handle is in line with the pipe and closed when the valve is perpendicular to the pipe. It only needs to be rotated 90 degrees.

Q: What is a ball valve?

A: A ball valve is a shutoff valve that controls the flow of a liquid or gas by means of a rotary ball having a bore. They can be operated by a handle or automated with an electric or pneumatic actuator.

Q: How to install a ball valve?

A: Screw the input and output of the ball valve into your threaded assembly. Ensure the handle is installed correctly (parallel is open) before installation.

Q: Can ball valves fail?

A: Yes, a ball valve can fail. Common failure types are a damaged seal (valve won't seal 100%) or debris entering the valve (valve won't move).

Q: What can a ball valve be used for?

A: A ball valve can be used both as a shut-off valve and as a control valve for both liquids and gasses. In the case of a control valve, the bore is usually made in a v-shape.

Q: Is there a wrong way to install a ball valve?

A: The best way to install a ball valve is to install the valve with the valve stem facing upwards.

Q: How often should ball valves be replaced?

A: For most applications, once a year is ideal, but ball valves in high-pressure and high-cycle applications should receive more frequent inspections.

Q: What is the life expectancy of a ball valve?

A: Using the latest and greatest ball valve in your plumbing can help save more water. It also helps you save money while helping the environment. A ball valve life expectancy is about eight to ten years. For such a simple mechanical device, the ball valve has enormous value to the gas and water industries.

Q: Do ball valves ever fail?

A: Ball valves are used in industrial processes to control the flow rate of materials. While they can last for many years, ball valves can sometimes fail due to a range of factors. These common causes of ball valve failure include corrosion, extreme temperatures, and improper installation.

Q: Is there a correct way to install a ball valve?

A: Ball valves may be installed in vertical or horizontal pipe runs, they are bi-directional therefore flow direction is not critical, however the best practice is to set up the valve handle to point in the direction of flow whenever possible.

Q: Does it matter which direction a ball valve is installed?

A: Essentially, it can be installed in any direction but any installation that is not the recommended usual way of installation may have effects on the way pressure is handled in the ball valve mechanism.

Q: Does a ball valve need to be fully open?

A: You should not use ball valves to control flow in a half-open or half-closed way. This is because the pressure could damage parts of the valve.

Q: What maintenance is required for a ball valve?

A: Ball valve maintenance steps. It is essential to follow a systematic approach to ball valve maintenance, including regular inspections, cleaning, lubrication, and testing to prevent problems before they occur. Regular cleanings: It is important to keep ball valves clean to extend their lifespan.

Q: What is the best lubricant for a ball valve?

A: RS Clare's Ball Valve Lubricant (BVL) has been designed specifically with the unique challenges of ball valves in mind, specifically: Consistency is slightly softer than Valve Lubricant 601 TM - this is felt by many operators to be important in ensuring that the spring loaded seats function correctly to achieve a seal.

Q: Do ball valves ever leak?

A: Ball valves can burst due to a variety of reasons. Leakage can occur when the valve isn't closed correctly due to debris or if the seal or valve is damaged. The leading causes of water ball valve leakage: The ball valve may leak internally if it is damaged or transported improperly.

Q: Are ball valves serviceable?

A: Design: Ball valves come in one-, two- and three-piece designs, the first two of which do not allow for maintenance and must be replaced when components fail. Three-piece ball valves are designed so that the seats and seals can be removed and replaced without removing the entire valve from the system.

Q: Can you overheat a ball valve?

A: Excessive heat can cause the valve's materials to expand. This causes leaks, deformation, or even complete valve failure. Overheating might occur due to factors like high fluid temperatures, inadequate cooling mechanisms, or improper valve selection.

Q: What is the most durable ball valve?

A: Stainless steel ball valves offer a long-lasting option, even when used in highly corrosive environments; 316 stainless steel is a particularly corrosion-resistant alternative that includes more nickel than standard stainless steel, as well as the addition of molybdenum — a silvery metal with a very high melting point.

Q: Can ball valves be repaired?

A: While they are generally very durable and leak resistant, they are not immune to damage. Luckily, fixing a ball valve is relatively simple once you understand the proper steps of the process.

Q: How do I know if my ball valve is full port?

A: Ball valve ports come in standard or full sizes. The difference can be summed up fairly simply: Full port: The valve port is the same diameter as the pipe. Standard port: The valve port is smaller than the pipe's diameter.
