What is a Gas Valve?

The gas valve is the temperature and gas control found on a natural gas water heater or a LP water heater. This valve is responsible for opening and closing the incoming gas to the water heater based on the temperature setting. Gas valves play a crucial role in controlling fuel flow to gas-powered appliances, ensuring safe and efficient operation.

Importance of Gas Valves in Gas Systems

Gas valves are critical in ensuring the safety and efficiency of gas systems. The following are some of the reasons why gas valves are vital in gas systems:

Versatility

Gas valves can be used in a variety of applications, from home heating systems to industrial processes, making them a versatile and valuable component in various industries.

Durability

Gas valves are typically made of durable materials that can withstand high temperatures and pressures, ensuring long-lasting performance and reliability.

Easy installation and maintenance

Gas valves are relatively easy to install and maintain, making them a convenient and cost-effective solution for controlling gas flow in different settings.

Safety

Safety is one of the primary reasons why gas valves are essential in gas systems. Gas valves cut off the flow of gas in case of emergency, preventing gas leaks and potential explosions. For instance, the emergency shut-off valve is designed to quickly shut down the gas flow when a gas leak is detected.

Efficiency

Gas valves help to maintain the pressure in the gas system, which is vital for the efficient functioning of gas-fired appliances. Low or high pressure can cause faults or inefficiencies in gas appliances. For instance, low pressure can cause gas appliances to produce insufficient heat, while high pressure can damage the appliances.

Regulation of Gas Flow

Gas valves are used to manage the flow of gas in the gas system. They allow for precise regulation of the gas flow, ensuring that the right amount of gas is supplied to the appliances. In turn, this leads to optimal performance, energy efficiency, and cost savings.

How does a gas valve work?

The gas valve’s thermal well senses the temperature of the water inside the water heater. If the temperature of the water is below the desired temperature setting indicated by the dial on the gas control valve, the gas valve will open the gas supply line, feeding gas into the burner chamber via the burner tube (aka burner manifold tube) so that the burner will be lit/remain lit by the pilot assembly’s ignitor. During this process, the pilot assembly and thermal well send electric signals to the gas valve to ensure that the unit is operating safely, and to tell the gas valve when to stop allowing gas into the burner assembly.

Materials of Construction

Gas valves are made from metallic elements such as:

  • Aluminum offers good electrical and thermal conductivity, high reflectivity, and resistance to oxidation.
  • Copper is ductile and malleable and one of the best conductors of heat and electricity. Both brass and bronze are copper alloys.
  • Brass provides good bearing properties and low magnetic permeability.
  • Sintered bronze can be impregnated with materials such as oil and graphite.
  • Steel is a commercial iron that differs from cast iron both in terms of its malleability and lower carbon content.
  • Ductile iron provides the machinability and corrosion resistance of cast iron while providing additional strength and toughness.
  • Stainless steel is chemical and corrosion resistant and can have relatively high pressure ratings.

Gas valves can also be constructed of a variety of plastics, including:

  • Acetal polymers are semi-crystalline and offer excellent inherent lubricity, fatigue resistance, and chemical resistance.
  • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a widely used material with good flexibility, smooth surface, and nontoxic properties.
  • Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPC), a higher grade plastic used in water distribution systems, is suitable for high temperatures.
  • Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is an insoluble compound that exhibits a high degree of chemical resistance and a low coefficient of friction.
  • Polypropylene (PP) is similar to PTFE, but can be used in exposed applications because of its resistance to ultraviolet (UV) light, weathering, and ozone.
  • Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a fluoropolymer with better strength and lower creep than similar materials.

Types of Gas Valves and How They Are Used

There are several types of gas valves because of the different environments in which they are used. Below is a breakdown of seven kinds commonly used in the oil and gas industry.

1. Gate Valves

The gate valve may be the most commonly used in the industry. It uses a gate system to open or close a pipeline entirely. This is an excellent choice if the flow rate needs to be controlled and maintained. When the actuator completely opens the valve, the channel is unobstructed, allowing even slurry fluids like crude oil to flow easier. While it is not an ideal candidate if throttling is required in an application, there is not a noticeable pressure drop when this valve is used.

2. Globe Valves

When pressure control is necessary, the globe valve is frequently chosen. It is also often used for open and close operations. The valve plug sits vertically raised and lowered by the actuator as needed. They tend to create a more significant pressure drop than other valve types because of the S-shaped passageway within them. They are a good choice for flow regulation and throttling functions.

3. Check Valves

Gas refineries find check valves extremely helpful as the device opens under pressure and does not allow backflow of fluid or material. Because of the restricted backflow, cross-contamination of the product is prevented. That is, different materials can use the same pipeline. There is no need for an actuator as required in other valve types. However, it does need precise installation to ensure the response to fluid pressure occurs as required.

4. Plug Valves

The plug valve comprises a plug-shaped disc with a horizontal passageway bored through it. When the linear valve is open, fluid will move through the hole. Turning the actuator 90 degrees from the open position blocks any flow through the pipeline. This valve is not suggested for throttling functions but is ideal for unrefined oil products as found in biogas production.

5. Ball Valves

Ball valves are rotary valves that give pipelines fast shut-offs where tight sealing is often required. They are best suited for operation under fully open or fully closed positions as they do not offer reasonable regulation control or throttle functions. This type of valve comes in many different styles, which provides options within the industry. For example, a floating ball valve works better in low-to-medium pressure pipelines, and trunnion ball valves can handle high-pressure conditions. These are easy to repair, offer solid sealing, and provide quick shut-offs.

6. Butterfly Valves

These valves are simple in their construction, are lightweight, and compact. They use a disc-type element held by a rod to regulate flow. They can handle high-pressure pipelines and allow easy flow of materials. When they are closed, they shut tightly. Often, these are used in pipes with large diameters and where a gate valve is not applicable.

7. Slam-shut Valves

These valves provide additional safety of equipment either upstream or downstream from them. This type of valve may be found immediately before a regulator and is designed to remain open until a significant pressure change is detected. It then immediately shuts off the flow and must be reopened manually. They are sometimes referred to as relief and safety valves and are vital to the oil and gas industry in avoiding accidents and injury.

FAQ

Q: What is the purpose of the gas valve?

A: The gas valve on your furnace is one of the most important parts. It is ultimately responsible for delivering an adjusting the flow of gas pressure to your furnace to keep it lit when running. A gas valve replacement is a common furnace repair in older furnaces or when a gas leak is present.

Q: What is the purpose of the gas valve unit?

A: The gas valve unit (GVU) controls the gas feed pressure according to the engine load. In addition, the unit ensures safe maintenance on the engine and performs a leakage test of the automatic shut-off valves before the engine starts operating on gas.

Q: Where is the gas valve?

A: The house-side gas shutoff valve is usually located somewhere along the gas line between the meter and the first gas-fuelled appliance in your home. Most house-side valves are ball valves. If you have a high-pressure gas system, your main shutoff valve may be next to your furnace or water heater.

Q: What is the purpose of a gas check valve?

A: Check valves are an integral component of gas transmission systems, preventing reverse flow, dangerous gas mixtures, and the risk of pulsating pressures. Improper gas flow can lead to potentially dangerous problems such as leaks, contamination, shutdowns, fires, and explosions.

Q: What happens when a gas valve goes bad?

A: A failing furnace gas valve could result in a gas leak in your home. The gas may build up and suddenly release somewhere other than the sealed combustion chamber. If too much gas is released from the valve, the excess may seep out of the combustion chamber and mix with the air you breathe.

Q: Should I turn off gas valve?

A: Is it safe to shut off the gas valve to my home? You can safely shut off your home's main with precautions. If you smell a strong gas odor, leave your home immediately and call your utility company.

Q: How to check a gas valve?

A: Hold each tester wand on your multimeter to one of the terminals on the gas valve. A normal reading will show a range of 145-195 millivolts. If you see an mV reading outside of this range, it indicates that the gas valve is likely defective and needs to be replaced. Unfortunately, furnace gas valves cannot be repaired.

Q: How long does it take to replace a gas valve on a furnace?

A: Replacing a furnace gas valve takes 30 to 60 minutes on average or up to 2 hours for hard-to-access locations like crawlspaces and small attics.

Q: Which way turns a gas valve off?

A: The long side of your handle is parallel to the incoming gas line, which means your gas in on and flowing. By turning the handle perpendicular to the incoming pipe, you are closing the valve and shutting off the gas.

Q: What does a gas valve look like?

A: Homes with natural gas have a main shut-off valve typically called the “street-side valve.” It is located just before the gas meter and looks like a rectangular nub. For single-family houses, the gas meter is typically located outside of the house on the side or in the back.

Q: Can you fix a gas valve?

A: If something is wrong with the internal components of the gas valve, it should be replaced. Remember that gas valve repair and gas valve replacement can only be done by the manufacturer of the valve or someone certified by the gas valve manufacturer.

Q: What is the function of the main gas valve?

A: The primary valve, or safety valve, supplies gas to the pilot light. The second valve, or the main valve, allows gas to flow to the burners. The gas valve opens and closes to maintain temperature and allow or restrict gas flow to the pilot light and burners.

Q: What tells the gas valve to open?

A: A safety device called a pressure switch activates when the diaphragm inside it recognizes the suction or purging action of the inducer motor. Next, the three parts of the ignition sequence begin. The ignitor kicks on, the gas valve opens, and the flame sensor senses that the flame exists.
