What is a Motorized Valve?

A motorized valve is a valve type that uses an electric motor to open or close its mechanism. This type of valve is ideally suited to very large valve types or remote fluid control applications such as aircraft deicing, agricultural irrigation, and automated fire suppression. Most valve types are suited for motorized applications with some commonly used types being a gate, ball, and butterfly. The motorized valve is also well suited to remote flow control applications where system inputs involve incremental valve operation. The internal fluid control mechanisms of Motorized Valve are generally identical to their manual counterparts; valve actuation inputs are the only difference between the two.

How Does Motorised Valve work?

The valve is designed with two wear resistant ceramic discs with opposite triangular flow apertures (ball valve version also offered). Corresponding to the electric signal provided, the discs rotate over an angle of 90 ̊ opening the flow aperture. Different flow volumes can be achieved by adjusting the opening angle of the discs. The matching geometry of the pair of disks achieves a virtually linear flow characteristic.

Motorized Ball Valves Uses

For applications requiring continuous automatic flow control… motorized ball valves are the best option. You can use them anywhere in your home where you need automatic water control-for example, home water systems, HVAC, water filters, and other automation projects.

HVAC Systems: Motorized ball valves play a crucial role in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. They control the flow of hot or cold water, glycol, or other heat transfer fluids, regulating the temperature in buildings. These valves are essential for zone control, ensuring that different areas receive the right amount of heating or cooling.

Industrial Processes: In industrial settings, motorized ball valves are used for process control. They can handle a variety of fluids, including water, chemicals, and gases. Industries such as manufacturing, chemical processing, and food production rely on motorized ball valves to control their processes precisely.

Water Treatment: Water treatment facilities use motorized ball valves to manage the flow of water, chemicals, and additives. These valves ensure that water is treated, filtered, and distributed properly, meeting the required quality standards.

Irrigation Systems: In agriculture and landscaping, motorized ball valves are used in automated irrigation systems. They control water flow to different zones, helping conserve water and ensure that plants receive the right amount of hydration.

Swimming Pools and Spas: Motorized ball valves regulate water flow in swimming pool and spa systems. They are used to direct water to different features like fountains, jets, and waterfalls, enhancing the recreational experience.

Plumbing Systems: In residential and commercial plumbing, motorized ball valves can control water flow in individual fixtures, such as faucets and showers. They are also used for whole-house shutoff valves to control water supply to a building.

Fire Protection Systems: Fire protection systems often use motorized ball valves to control the flow of water or fire-suppressing agents. These valves play a critical role in fire sprinkler systems, ensuring water is delivered to the appropriate areas during a fire emergency.

Oil and Gas Industry: Motorized ball valves are used to control the flow of oil, natural gas, and other hydrocarbons in pipelines and processing facilities. They provide reliable shutoff and control in demanding and hazardous environments.

Marine Applications: In marine systems, motorized ball valves control water and fluid flow for various purposes, such as ballast systems, bilge pumps, and engine cooling.

Brewing and Beverage Industry: Breweries and beverage production facilities use motorized ball valves to control the flow of liquids during the brewing and bottling processes, ensuring precise measurements and consistent product quality.

How To Choose The Right Motorised Valve

When choosing the right motorised valve for your specific application, consider the following factors:

Valve type: There are different types of motorised valves available, including ball valves, butterfly valves, and globe valves. Consider the type of valve that best suits your specific needs and system requirements.

Size and flow rate: Ensure that the motorised valve you choose is the appropriate size for your system's flow rate and pressure requirements.

Voltage and power supply: Check the voltage and power supply requirements of the motorised valve to ensure compatibility with your system.

Control options: Consider whether you need a motorised valve with manual override capabilities, remote control capabilities, or programmable settings for automation.

Material and compatibility: Choose a motorised valve made from materials that are compatible with the fluids and temperatures in your system, such as stainless steel for corrosive environments.

Application: Consider the specific application for which the motorised valve will be used, such as heating, cooling, water treatment, or industrial processes, and choose a valve that is designed for that purpose.

Budget: Determine your budget for the motorised valve and compare prices from different manufacturers to find one that offers the best value for your needs.

FAQ

Q: What is the purpose of a motorized valve?

A: In a central heating system, a motorised valve is used control the flow rate of water and make sure that water is only going as of where and when it is required. The motorised valve can be used to control both the heating and the hot water.

Q: What is Motorised ball valve?

A: Motorized ball valves are versatile devices used in a wide range of applications across various industries. They offer precise control over fluid flow and are commonly used for both on/off and modulating functions.

Q: What is the difference between manual valve and motorized valve?

A: Both manual and electric motorized butterfly valves have their pros and cons. Manual valves are simple, easy to install and operate, and less expensive than electric valves. However, they require regular human intervention and are less accurate and precise than electric motorized valves.

Q: What does a motorised valve look like?

A: The three-port valve looks like a tee, but it has a metal or plastic box sitting on top that contains a motor. The tee has three routes for water, or "ports"; one for water from the boiler, one to the hot water tank, and one to the central heating system.

Q: What happens when a motorised valve fails?

A: Many people might not even be aware of the motorised valve controlling your hot water until the day there is no hot water! When the 2 or 3 motorised port valve fails, it can mean that there is no hot water, either to your taps and shower or to the radiators, and sometimes both.

Q: Can you change a motorised valve without draining the system?

A: If you are only updating one radiator you can change the radiator valve without fully draining the system and there are actually benefits of doing so. For example, the water in your central heating system is filled with heating additives and inhibitor which protect the system.

Q: What is the difference between Motorised valve and solenoid valve?

A: The solenoid valve can be turned on or off in one second. Generally used in small flow and small pressure. Motorized Valve opening can be controlled, it can be open, closed, half-open or half-closed. It can control the flow of media in the pipeline and solenoid valve can't meet this requirement.

Q: Should a motorised valve be on auto or manual?

A: The valve incorporates a manual lever, the lever should normally be in 'AUTO' position, but can be moved to 'MAN OPEN' position for system drain down and filling purposes only. Before fitting the valve, read through the plumbing and wiring instructions.

Q: What are the different types of motorized operated valves?

A: There are a few different types of motor operated valves, including: ball valves, butterfly valves, plug valves, and gate valves. Ball valves and butterfly valves are the most common type of MOVs. Motor operated valves can be actuated manually in the event of a power outage or other emergency.

Q: How to work a motorised valve?

A: They consist of a circular disc mounted on a rotating shaft, and when the valve is fully closed, the disc blocks the flow of fluid. When the valve is fully open, the disc is rotated a quarter turn, allowing fluid to pass through.

Q: Can the motorised valve get stuck?

A: In my experience you can usually get the actuators off with a bit of fiddling and twisting no matter where the lever is. If the manual lever won't move it suggests the valve may be stuck.
